When you join the Bellefonte Area School District, you join a family of passionate educators working hard to create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
With a vision to respect diversity, the district strives to work with the community and parents to develop each student's unique needs. Through this process, the district believes they can meet their goal of producing alumni who will become responsible members of society, all the while leading a positive, enriched life.
Located entirely within Centre County, Pennsylvania, the district educates nearly 2,700 students and employs upward of 400 educators and staff members. It encompasses approximately 115 square miles, serves a resident population of 21,480, and covers Bellefonte Borough along with Benner, Marion, Spring and Walker townships. The district operates four elementary schools, a middle and a high school.
Variety of curriculum keeps students busy. There's a long list of learning experiences available in the Bellefonte Area School District; from elementary school to graduation day, students are being prepared for an ever-changing global society in an environment that is engaging, challenging and relevant.
That learning mantra is reflected in the district’s career exploration programs. From internships and mentorships to work with the Central Pennsylvania Science and Technology Center, there's an opportunity for nearly everyone.
Students should be well prepared for these real-world experiences due to their rigorous course studies, which could include courses from the 19 offered College in the High School classes. Through this program, students have the opportunity to earn college credits for each course they successfully complete. The district also offers 21 AP courses.
Other unique programs exist in the district, such as "RED Talks." This program is part of the district's career awareness program and is designed to promote reflection and curiosity by bringing the "real world" to students. Through lectures from esteemed professionals in the community, Bellefonte students have a chance to learn what professional life is all about.
Another program recently held was "BAMS in Space." Selected as only one of five middle schools nationwide to participate in this initiative, students had the opportunity to ask a panel of local experts from Penn State and AccuWeather space-related questions before making contact with the International Space Station. Students were then allowed to ask astronaut Scott Tingle questions as the station flew above the school.
With a plenitude of learning opportunities in the classroom, it's no surprise that Bellefonte Area School District has some great out-of-classroom learning opportunities as well, including many athletic opportunities.
From golf to lacrosse, there's a variety of team sports to choose from. And for many participants, there will be the chance to perform under the lights of a newly renovated Rogers Stadium. This $7 million project includes new seating and turf, an eight-lane track, two new fieldhouses, new locker rooms, an additional concessions stand, relocated baseball fields and more.
While upgrades at the stadium will bring long sought-after improvements, it would be hard to improve upon the school spirit at Bellefonte Area High School. Community involvement is high in this district, as many outreach programs attest. A strong parent-teacher organization, Family Science (STEM) events, Family Math events, Bellefonte READS (a community literacy event) and others mean parents have more opportunities than ever to get involved in their child's education.
With such strong community support, it's no surprise that the district has deeply imbedded values of kindness, dignity and respect for others. And in a place like Happy Valley, those values have no trouble thriving.
